In a blonde wig, bikini and stick-on tattoos, Beth Rypins of Napa won the 5-mile kayak portion of the Great Russian River Race, which drew more than 400 paddlers and a total of 700 people to the Sonoma County event. She also won Best-Dressed.
Napan Beth Rypins, a former professional river rafter and paddler for 25 years who owns Wine Country CrossFit, won overall first place in the five-mile kayak competition during Saturday's Second Annual Great Russian River Race in Healdsburg. Rypins told Healdsburg Patch she had been off the river for a while, but when she heard about last year's event, she decided to dust off her paddling chops and jump in for the 2012 return of the 5-mile river race. "Since I had the advantage of experience, I decided to start way back and work myself up, picking people off," said Rypins, who also won the day's "Best Dressed" award, sporting a blonde wig, bikini and pasted-on tattoos. "I had to work really hard to pick people off, but I did it," Rypins …

Officials say the move will aid in student learning, focus and achievement.
An ambitious schools reconfiguration that would split two local elementaries, add a 7th and 8th grade to Thomas Page and expand 6th grade at Lawrence Jones unanimously passed the school board last night. Assistant Superintendent Elizabeth Kaufman said when the idea was first introduced that the move would be a bold, yet positive move for the district. "We noticed we have a lot of combination classes — grades one and two together, for example, three and four or five and six," she said. "We looked at the numbers and we could have smaller class sizes, while at the same time having fewer combination classes." According to Superintendent Robert Haley, the change is aimed at: "The biggest thing is really to improve instruction by having an …

A prior conflict moved the tryout from its original scheduled date and place on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif. according to Fightmaster. "In an effort to keep the tryout in Marin, the Pacifics exhausted every possible field option in the County," he said. "Given the time of the year, the number field closures, the demand for the few that are open, none were available." Now, the tryouts are scheduled for 9 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 22, at USF's Benedetti Diamond. "All accomplished players are …
