SMART in Rohnert Park: It's Real

The newly-proposed Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit stop in Rohnert Park was adorned with a sign nearby this week.

Although it's not official, it's looking more and more like the SMART stop's relocation from Rohnert Park's north end near Roberts Lake Road, to City Center near the former State Farm Insurance is a go.

A new sign proclaiming: "There is a train coming to town," is the evidence.

"It's not signed, sealed and delivered," said Mayor Jake Mackenzie. "But the SMART Board has agreed to has agreed to relocate the Rohenrt Park station to Rohnert Park Expressway."

Mackenzie said there's been no change in the cost, estimated last year, when the City Council raised the question in February 2011 about what it would take to move the station.

According SMART Planning Manager John Nemeth, the estimated cost of the relocation is between $500,000 and $1 million. We reported that story in August, and Mackenzie said there's been no changes in those preliminary cost figures.
